The Arthur Read Diary - Show All

WIN! WIN! WIN! any purchase at Arthur Read Fine Jewellery entitles you to FREE entry to our PRIZE DRAW CLICK for details - WIN! WIN! WIN! :::: 20th September 2008 - We are currently replacing around 20 watch batteries every day in watches bought elsewhere…why on earth are people still buying watches that need batteries?! See the link to CITIZEN from our website and save yourself a load of inconvenience? - Julian :::: 25th July 2008 - Arthur Read Jeweller Valuation Day on 8nd September!! CLICK HERE for details, or phone - 01405 763556 - after the success of the April Valuation Day, we are running another event, it would be great to see you there - Julian :::: 19th May 2008 - Lots of new exciting stuff in stock including a consignment of the ever popular silver set with natural gemstones. PLUS....nothing to do with jewellery but of great interest to anyone with any ties to Goole - CLICK HERE ::: 10th March 2008 - At last we have found time to clean, polish, re-furbish, ticket and display a fresh consignment of antique and second hand jewellery. As with our new stuff, our old jewellery is supplied in a quality box with free gift wrapping if required and is covered by a 12 month guarantee - Joanne :::: March 3rd 2008 - Looking for a wedding ring? - CLICK HERE The price of our stock English handmade wedding bands is unbeatable; finest quality, good range of styles and CONSIDERABLY cheaper than when we re-stock them - Julian :::: 25th February 2008 - Nearly March already.....The birthstone for March is Aquamarine, which as a handy aside, apparently 'protects against the wiles of the devil'.....! - Julian :::: 19th February 2008 - With gold at around 30% higher than 12 months ago and other precious metals, Diamonds and gemstones pro-rata we are going to have to adjust prices of our stock imminently - If you have your eye on a particular piece and are 'thinking about it', we suggest its make your mind up time because next time you look, the price may be a shock - Julian :::: 11th February 2008 - ....and it's another glorious day; start of summer in February? Global warming, meteorological blip or natural cycle leading to next ice age? Whatever, it'll probably be snowing in June so we might as well enjoy whilst we can! - Julian :::: 4th February 2008 - 'Amethyst is the birthstone for those born in February' - I thought I would get that in quick because we've got lots of fantastic Amethyst set jewellery in stock, whereas the demand for Garnet set jewellery in January totally caught us out! Julian :::: 28th January 2008 - House prices have 'only' increased by 2.3% last month and that is apparently a bad thing?! Do people really think how the media tells them to think? If British house prices dropped 50%, they would in most cases still be well up on 5 years ago. Nothing whatsoever to do with jewellery, other than it all ties in with gold at over $900 an ounce and something will have to give. Julian :::: 16th January 2008 - Arthur Read Jeweller Valuation Day on 2nd April!! CLICK HERE for details, or phone - 01405 763556 - Julian :::: 7th January 2008 - All back to normal at last (phew!). Thankfully it appears that everyone who wants a kitchen at half price, a settee at 50% off half price (and pay in 2010) or a fight at the Next sale has been fulfilled and now we can all get on with enjoying 2008. - Julian :::: 31st December 2007 - That's about it for 2007. Best health and happiness to all for 2008. Julian :::: 29th December 2007 - "Yes Madam, we DO need an hour to replace the battery in your watch"; we have another dozen on the bench and require enough time to sit down, do the job properly and leave it on test for a period.....after which, every watch battery we replace is guaranteed for 12 months. "No Sir, we don't sell loose batteries"; in the same way they don't sell pork and flour at the bakers next door to enable you to make your own sausage rolls!!!!!!!!!!!! Julian :::: 28th December 2007 - Well, hopefully Santa (with a little advice and guidance from us at Arthur Read) came up with the goods, and upon opening your (beautifully wrapped and boxed) gift it was everything you had hoped for? If for any reason you aren't totally delighted (you don't even need an excuse) just bring it back with the receipt within 28 days of purchase and we will exchange it, or in the unlikely event of being unable to fulfil your jewellery desires, refund without question. Julian :::: 27th December 2007 - Can anyone explain to me the current trend that for purchasing watches 'made' by companies who don't make watches? Armani manufacture desirable clothing, Jaguar make superb cars, Burberry are good at macs, Ted Baker and Ben Sherman specialise in shirts.......but in my experience of trying to make faulty ones work, none of them are real hot at watch manufacture! Never mind, we'll just keep replacing batteries in them and reading their last rites when they reach the end of their (thankfully short) lives. Julian :::: 24th December 2007 - A matter of hours before the 'I've left it too late now' moment and still a number of (increasingly) furrowed brows desperately scanning our displays. Being as we've spent the last few years building a massive stock of all things precious in gemstone and metal, we should be able to alleviate the crisis for most. BUT here's a hint........... this time of year comes round every 12 months and it shouldn't be a surprise?! Best wishes to all and don't overdo it over the next couple of days....We're back again on Thursday. Julian :::: 23rd December 2007 - There are positive signs of a renaissance among our male customers; in previous years the following scenario was common. Bloke enters our shop and slaps a wad of notes on counter with 'put us summat in a nice box and wrap it up fancy please'. After a few succinct questions regarding the tastes and lifestyle of 'our lass' we usually managed to ensure that the gift would be appropriate for and appreciated by the intended recipient (after they had got past the pretty paper, box and posh box). HOWEVER, this year there is a definite move to putting some time and thought into these purchases, albeit with less than 72 hours to go before the Christmas Eve cut-off. Strangely reassuring for some reason?..... Julian :::: 21st December 2007 - There are some superb sales-people out there...... we are currently inundated with requests to alter the finger size of rings purchased elsewhere (TV shopping, EBay, who knows?) by as much as ten sizes when the quality and design of the jewellery is such that it won't stand altering at all. Why didn't they buy the correct size in the first place? How did they allow themselves to be sold something so wrong? Next project; course in human psychology?! - Julian :::: 20th December 2007 - Well, looking out of the door, Goole (almost) looks festive! A particularly nice Christmas tree adorns the clock tower roundabout this year, the lights are doing their best to make Boothferry Road into a winter wonderland and some folk are even smiling at each other..... the festive spirit is alive. - Julian ::::19th December 2007 - It's just happened again!! We ALWAYS have 6 windows, 3 triple and a double wall cabinet and two double floor cabinets jam packed full of fabulous jewellery; every piece has been selected by myself and/or Jo and has a full descriptive ticket explaining exactly what it is you are looking at and the price (none of this 'if you have to ask the price, you can't afford it' rubbish). Yet still, at least a couple of times a week, we get asked 'is this all you've got'!! And folk are a bit put-out when we shrug our shoulders in bemusement. UNBELIEVABLE - Julian :::: 18th December 2007 - The next time a customer asks for a one carat diamond, there will be words!! Actually, we will just spend half an hour as usual explaining that, as with many things in life, quality is MUCH more important than quantity with precious gemstones. Asking for a one carat diamond without further criteria is tantamount to asking for a car producing 200bhp without caring if its a brand new Fiat or a 1960s Ferrari. We have sold one carat Diamonds in 18ct gold solitaire ring mounts for less than £300 and currently have one in stock for over £5,000!! Anyway, there is a more in-depth explanation of the subtleties of Diamond qualities elsewhere on www.arthurreadjeweller.co.uk - Julian :::: 17th December 2007 - 8 trading days left to Xmas; all the media whingeing about the credit melt-down in the western world, but here in the real world (despite what they attempt to brainwash us with) nothing has changed and life goes on as normal. Lots of customers who having been desperately seeking inspiration on shopping expeditions to the Big Cities (Doncaster, Hull, York, Sheffield) return having realised that what they want is much closer to home! Also, lots of last minute repairs which we are just managing to promise before Christmas Eve. In fact, business as normal!! - Julian
