A charming 'mizpah' brooch in silver with applied rose and yellow gold decoration. Absolutely typical of the late 1800's
Mizpah is Hebrew for "watchtower." It is mentioned in the Bible story of Jacob and Laban who made a pile of stones to mark an agreement between two people, with God as their watching witness.
Today, mizpah has come to mean an emotional bond between people who are separated, either physically or by death. Mizpah jewellery bears the words "The LORD watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another" which is a direct quote from Genesis 31:49.
